The ongoing project Hotel Margarita understands hospitality as a tool to cultivate exchange and trust in our society and explores strategies for a community-oriented spatial production. This work is a critical response to current developments in architectural practice and building industry regarding issues on relation, ground, public and space. Here, the alternative notion of the “hotel” renegotiates the spaces for elementary human needs and reveals different forms of spatial appropriation that generate a hospitable, creative environment.
Our shared studio space – a formerly vacant ground-floor shop in Vienna, Margareten – has been collectively renovated and now serves as a 1:1 scale case study. A series of on-site interventions, accompanied by public events, creates a repository of experiences, knowledge and skills, recorded in a magazine publication that serves as an expanded space for exchange.
